Next Stop Merida, Mexico

My time in Playa Del Carmen was nice but I decided it was time to go somewhere else. After a couple of weeks in Playa Del Carmen I headed north to Merida, Mexico. I took the Ado bus and paid about $30 for a one way ticket. The bus ride to Merida is 3 1/2 hours. In order to make it to Merida after 3pm (airbnb check in time) I would need to leave Playa Del Carmen no earlier than 11 am. I took the bus from the Ado Alterna bus station to the Centro Merida station. The bus was less than half full and there were plenty of empty seats. My luggage was stored underneath the bus. The bus attendant gave me a ticket for my luggage as he stored it underneath the bus.  I purchased my ticket online instead of in person. This allowed me to reserve the seat I wanted. I sat in the front of the bus on the right side so I could see out the window.

The bus ride was pretty smooth to Merida. Once we pulled into the station I got off the bus and grabbed my luggage.  I walked through the bus station and headed toward the front door. As soon as I walked outside I saw a taxi and flagged him down. I gave him the address to my airbnb but he couldn’t find it in his GPS. Sometimes the addresses in Mexico can be difficult to locate. The addresses are usually off a main avenue and then in between two streets.

I ended up using the GPS on my phone to get us to the airbnb. I checked the area ahead of time and saw there was an electronic store next to the airbnb. I was able to enter the business name in my GPS and get directions on my phone. The airbnb host sent me a picture of the outside and I recognized it as we were passing by.

As you can see the outside looks different than a lot of places in the US but it was in a good neighborhood. The inside was exactly as described in the airbnb listing. There was a nice size bed, kitchen, dining room with chairs and a nice bathroom. I enjoyed my stay at this airbnb in Merida. This area didn’t have a lot of restaurants in close walking distance but it was in a good central location. There was a Walmart 15 mins away. I would walk there and Uber back if I had a lot of bags.

My first impression of Merida was interesting. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. The longer I stayed and traveled around Merida the more I liked it.
